Value of Membership

Over the past 60 years, ASGE has been a pioneer and leader in the promotion of endoscopic practice and research and has championed the cause of endoscopists in private and group practice, as well as academia.

Whether you are a trainee, or a full time endoscopist practicing in the United States or abroad, there are many benefits of ASGE membership designed specifically to meet your needs. Being an ASGE member has a positive reflection on you because it connotes a respected and well-trained endoscopist to your colleagues, patients and institution.

Membership Categories
ASGE membership is on a calendar-year basis from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 each year. Membership is organized into 8 classes: active, international, trainee, associate, and affiliate. Which includes, three sub-categories of membership: senior, fellowship (FASGE) and honorary. For full eligibility requirements, please see the respective bylaws listed below.

Only Active Members and Fellows shall have the right to vote and to hold elective of¬fice. All applicants for Membership are required to meet criteria established from time to time by the Governing Board.

The sooner you submit your application for membership, the sooner you can start receiving benefits that are available to members only. An application can be completed on-line or downloaded and returned via fax or mail. All complete applications will be processed in six to eight weeks. Upon approval of your application, you will be notified.

Active Member
The Active membership category is for individuals who can present documented evidence of successful completion of an accredited training program that includes gastrointestinal endoscopy administered by physicians and/or surgeons during a fellowship in adult or pediatric gastroenterology or surgical residency training program, including at least one of the following: upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, laparoscopy, colonoscopy or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. The applicant must be sponsored by two active or senior members of the society, one of whom has personal knowledge of the applicant’s endoscopic training and skills.

International Member
The International membership category is for individuals who reside outside the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada and can provide evidence of certification by an appropriate specialty board or documented evidence of completion of an accredited training program in gastroenterology, pediatric gastroenterology or general surgery. Those applicants who reside in countries which do not have a specialty board must submit evidence of membership in and endorsement by their national endoscopic society. The applicant must be sponsored by one active, senior or international member of the ASGE.

Trainee Member
The Trainee membership category is for resident fellows or trainees who have completed at least two years of post-doctoral training and are continuing with full-time training status in an ACGME or RCPSC accredited program which includes gastrointestinal endoscopy under the supervision of a member of the Society or an instructor whose endoscopic credentials are acceptable to the membership committee. The applicant’s training director is required to complete a trainee endorsement form on the applicant’s behalf.

Associate Member
Candidates for Associate membership include registered nurses, technicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners who are employed in the field of endoscopy but do not perform endoscopy. SGNA members receive a discount on associate member dues.

Affiliate Member
The Affiliate membership category is for those individuals who do not practice endoscopy but demonstrate special interest in the broad field of gastrointestinal endoscopy, without personally having the endoscopic training or skills. This includes industry representatives. The applicant must be sponsored by two Active or Senior members of the ASGE.

Affiliate Member for PharmDs, Practice Managers, Directors and Administrators
The Affiliate membership category is for those individuals who do not practice endoscopy but demonstrate special interest in the broad field of gastrointestinal endoscopy, without personally having the endoscopic training or skills.  The applicant must be sponsored by one Active or Senior members of the ASGE.

Senior Member
After reaching the age of sixty-five years or ceasing to practice gastrointestinal endoscopy, an Active or International Member may, upon request and by approval of the ASGE Governing Board, be named a Senior Member.

FASGE (Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)
Fellowship in the ASGE is intended to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the Society, through service or education, or to the field of endoscopy.


Honorary Member
The Governing Board of the Society is authorized to confer Honorary membership in the Society on any physician, scientist or lay person whom it considers worthy of this recognition because of outstanding contributions to the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy or related fields. A maximum of three Honorary Members may be elected annually by the Governing Board upon nomination by the Awards Committee with no more than one from each of the OMED Zones. Honorary Members shall be limited to 50. Honorary members shall have all the privileges of Active members except the right to vote and to hold elective office. They shall not be required to pay dues and shall receive a complimentary subscription to GIE Journal: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
