NYSGE Florence Lefcourt Research Award

Submission

The ASGE Research Committee requires electronic submission. If you experience problems submitting your grant application, please email the application and/or questions to grants@asge.org.

Description

The ASGE Foundation and the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (NYSGE) announce that applications are currently being accepted for the Florence Lefcourt Award to support collaborative projects in the areas of endoscopic research and educational outreach in the New York region. For 2015, the $10,000 NYSGE award is designated for research projects. The 2016 award will support public outreach. This award will alternate annually between public education and research initiatives, and will be administered by the ASGE Foundation.

Objective

The award objective is to foster research in gastrointestinal endoscopy both within and outside of academic centers.

Eligibility

Candidate must be a member of both ASGE and NYSGE, be an MD, DO or have equivalent clinical doctorate degree, and be current in a gastroenterology-related and endoscopic practice in an academic institution or private practice in New York state. Additionally, all applicants seeking funding will need to contact the NYSGE for a letter of support to be included with the application. Contact the NYSGE offices at 646-218-0650 or info@nysge.org.

Applications for ASGE Endoscopic Research Awards (ERA) may also be considered for the Florence Lefcourt Award. The ERA application must meet eligibility requirements for both awards including a letter of support from NYSGE. If an eligible ERA applicant is selected as the recipient of the Lefcourt Award, the $10,000 grant will be considered a portion of the total grant provided by ASGE.

View additional information on the ASGE Endoscopic Research Awards (ERA).

     Awards and Requirements

  • Grants may be requested for $10,000 in funding and for one year of study. Requests for funding "seed" projects that will lead to further research, as well as larger requests for definitive clinical trials will be considered. In order to maximize the funds available for research, money for travel to meeting(s) will not be provided, nor will funding be provided for indirect costs.
  • The budget request should be detailed and all items should be clearly related to the research proposal. Budgets will be carefully scrutinized by the ASGE Research Committee and will be considered in the scoring of the grant. Inappropriate or poorly justified budgets will jeopardize the likelihood of the application receiving an award. Additionally, the committee retains the right to adjust the award to an amount it feels appropriate for the project.
  • Funding requests may include:
    • Personnel (research assistant and/or faculty salary support—percentage of time for study should be specified and appropriately justified).
    • Study supplies
    • Equipment essential for study
  • Funding will not be provided for:
    • Salary support for trainees
    • Computer purchases (unless a unique application is proposed)
    • Standard equipment and supplies needed for appropriate patient care (for example, sclerotherapy needles)
    • Travel to meetings
    • Indirect costs
  • Duration of funding is one year.
  • Studies that include more than one center should provide institutional review board approval from each center. The participating institutions and investigators should be specified in the application.
  • Progress reports must be submitted to the chair of the research committee via the ASGE Administrative Offices every 12 months for the duration of the project. Progress reports must include a financial statement from the institutional grants or accounting office. Failure to submit a progress report by the stated deadline may affect future funding.
    • Requests for extensions to submit progress reports must be submitted in writing to the chair of the research committee via the ASGE administrative office.

Each application must have page numbers and contain:

  • A testable hypothesis and specific aims involving endoscopy or its outcomes
  • A clearly presented rationale
  • A methodology appropriate to the hypothesis
  • Analysis of data
  • Preliminary data strongly recommended
  • A budget specific and appropriate for the proposed research
  • Previous ASGE-funded studies should submit a copy of the previous budget and financial report in order to be considered for additional funding.
  • A letter of support from NYSGE.

Upon completion of the award, ASGE requires submission of a final scientific and financial report from the grants or accounting office. All publications and abstracts must acknowledge support from the ASGE Foundation and NYSGE. Budget should be included in application and requested in United States dollars.

Selection Criteria

Grants are awarded based on the scientific merit of the proposal and assessment of the investigator's ability to complete the project (supportive environment, experience, training, availability of patients and other resources needed). The proposed research project must be approved by the ASGE Research Committee and be of such quality to lead to presentation at Digestive Disease Week® with subsequent publication. The objective of the awards is the eventual submission of larger research funding requests, including federal funding.

Review Process

A selection committee comprised of the ASGE Research Committee will review the proposals and recommend awardees. The final selection of awards is made by the ASGE Governing Board.
