ASGE POLICY STATEMENT ON ENDOSCOPIC RESEARCH
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) supports an expansion of the federal investment in endoscopic research, based on priorities developed by clinicians and scientists who work in and out of government agencies. ASGE also endorses the development of, and support for, a large cadre of skilled endoscopic investigators.
Endoscopic research should encompass basic, translational and clinical research. ASGE is particularly interested in federal support for endoscopic research pertaining to Barrett’s esophagus, capsule endoscopy, colorectal cancer, controlled trials in endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP, comparative effectiveness research in endoscopy, endoscopic optical recognition techniques, new quality indicators in endoscopy, NOTES and innovative endoscopic treatments for obesity. ASGE supports funding from diverse sources for pilot projects that will lead to additional studies as well as larger, more definitive clinical trials.
