Advanced Practice Provider Onboarding for the GI Practice

Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are crucial members of the gastroenterology clinical team in delivering high quality and efficient care to patients.  The Advanced Practice Provider Onboarding for the GI Practice course examines GI-specific essentials for APPs new or returning to GI and provides best practices to assist APPs in navigating their role in all GI practice setting. A team-oriented course, this is a must-attend course for APP supervisors, practice administrators and physician leaders responsible for orienting the APP to their new roles and responsibilities. Core sessions taking place will be: Preparing the Patient for Endoscopy, Ins and Outs of Endoscopy, APP Inpatient and Outpatient Workday, and Building a Quality Team. Key topics covered include: drafting quality GI notes, interactive case studies on the basics of endoscopy, and the role of GI APPs and their workday. The Advanced Practice Provider Onboarding for the GI Practice course will become a critical resource for practices that want to create an effective APP/physician collaboration and successfully and smoothly integrate new APPs into their GI team.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize key aspects of scope of practice in GI consultation as reflected in proper documentation. 
  • Summarize various endoscopic procedures and how best to prepare the patient for endoscopy.
  • Identify common codes used for GI consult endoscopic procedures.
  • Discuss the role of the of the GI APP by chronicling both inpatient and outpatient workdays.
  • Outline tools and resources needed to develop an onboarding program for the GI APP.
  • List key elements of a high-performing, quality GI team.

Dr. Vicari joined Rockford Gastroenterology Associates, Ltd. in 1997 and is now Managing Partner.  He also is the Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford.  Dr. Vicari completed his GI Fellowship in gastroenterology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and is Board Certified in Gastroenterology.  He currently serves Chair of the Practice Management Committee of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and is a journal reviewer for the American Journal of Gastroenterology.  Dr. Vicari has presented numerous lectures and presentations to students, and residents and physicians both locally and nationally.

Jill Olmstead is an Adult Nurse Practitioner at Providence St. Joseph Health. She has practiced as an NP for over 15 years specializing in gastroenterology. Her practice includes evaluating and managing new patient GI consultations, follow-up visits and diagnostic Flexible sigmoidoscopies. Jill is credentialed as a certified coder, a clinical documentation improvement specialist and risk adjustment coder. Jill recently was inducted as a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and currently serves on ASGE’s Reimbursement Committee. She has been published in Gastroenterology Nursing, the Journal for the American Academy for Nurse Practitioners and the Journal for Nurse Practitioners.
