We all recognize the effects of obesity with unsettling trends of an increasing patient population and related comorbidities. This ASGE STAR program is an advanced bariatric suturing training course that aggregates your medical experience and skill as a master endoscopist, bridging medical therapy and weight loss endoscopy. Endoscopic therapies will focus upon endoscopic sutured gastroplasty (ESG) and transoral outlet reduction for weight regain after Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. Post procedural best practices will be reviewed in the setting of pharmacotherapy, dietary and lifestyle counseling.

Course participants should be very comfortable with endoscopic skills, with a demonstrated initiative in refining their bariatric medical and skills-based training, willingness to engage in video assessment tools within individual and group learning environments. Prerequisites for this course include, indicating educational or training experiences with various programs, or submission of applicable deidentified procedural notes.

Throughout this hands-on program, participants will receive protected, individualized video captures of skills training followed by instructional debriefing and further expert faculty guided refinement. An ASGE STAR certification in advanced bariatric suturing will be granted to those who successfully complete the knowledge and skills-based assessment requirements of the program.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify best practices for endoscopic screening prior to bariatric surgery
  • List 3-5 current recommendations for endoscopic surveillance after bariatric surgery
  • Write commonly endoscopic therapies used as a treatment for Class 1 and 2 obesity
  • Explain common complications of endoscopic therapies for obesity
  • Summarize endoscopic techniques for management of post-operative bariatric complications
  • Successfully demonstrate ESD and ESG techniques for endoscopic bariatric suturing
