    ASGE Connection March 2017, Vol. 5, No. 1 - Pancreatic cystic lesions are being identified with increased frequency due to the widespread use of cross-sectional imaging, typically for non- GI conditions such as back pain or a suspected kidney stone. There is a wide spectrum of cystic lesions of the pancreas that range from non- neoplastic lesions, such as pseudocysts, to neoplastic lesions without malignancy risk, such as serous cystadenomas, to tumors with a risk of malignancy, i.e., mucinous cystic and intraductal papillary neoplasms.

Q: An asymptomatic person is found to have a sub-centimeter submucosal lesion on a screening colonoscopy. Biopsies revealed a “neuroendocrine neoplasm” consistent with a rectal carcinoid. The lesion was not removed. The patient is then referred to a colorectal surgeon who in turn asks his colleague to perform a rectal ultrasound with fine-needle aspiration (FNA).
