GIE Peer Review Mentorship Program

For many, peer review can feel like navigating through uncharted waters. There is no formal training for reviewing a clinical research paper, yet this is one of the foundations of becoming a strong researcher. Peer review calls for art, skill, and practice, but often there is no clear path on how to systematically critique a paper, especially in the early stages of one's career. A good way to fast-track your career is by working with one of GIE’s expert mentors to review manuscripts and become a better author yourself. Here, you will have the unique opportunity to ask for general guidance on certain aspects of reviewing a paper, and "learn as you go."

Mentor and Mentee Matches

Nomination Process

We are looking for applicants who will put in the time (>9 papers per year) to review all papers promptly with their mentors, and who will be open and willing to learn from their experienced mentors. It takes commitment in time and energy, and your performance will be monitored closely, but you reap benefits over the long-term. Many of our outstanding reviewers eventually become members of the Editorial Review Board, which can lead to a multitude of opportunities to serve in GIE or ASGE. GIE invites GI fellows and those in the early stages of their career to join its mentorship program. Candidates for the 2027-2028 program will be considered starting in June of 2027.

Closed for submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the expectations for mentees?

This is a sort of “learn as you go” experience in which you will be working with a mentor while reviewing articles for GIE. Mentees are expected to:

  1. Involve their mentors in all assignments
  2. Commit to reviewing about 9 papers per year
  3. Send a copy of each manuscript to their mentor as soon as an invitation is accepted, copying Stephanie Kinnan (skinnan@asge.org)
  4. Send a draft of their critique a week after accepting the invitation
  5. Maintain confidentiality by only discussing the paper with their mentor

Mentees must be open and willing to learn from their experienced mentors!

When will I know who my mentor is?
Dr. Douglas Pleskow and Assistant Director of Publications, Stephanie Kinnan, will be in touch as soon as mentorship assignments are finalized.
What is the timeline for the Mentorship Program?
This is a 12-month program, beginning in September of the current year and ending in August of the following year.
Is there a way to formally accept the invitation to become a mentee in Editorial Manager?

You will not see an invitation in Editorial Manager until you are assigned an article to review. There is no further action needed in EM to accept your reviewer role.
