ASGE members may submit coding inquiries electronically to codingquestions@asge.org. When submitting a question, please allow at least three business days for a response. When submitting inquiries, please include the ASGE member’s name and ID number. Only questions will be accepted and no reports. Below is our featured Coding Question of the Month that could be beneficial to your practice.
Question: Can these laboratory tests be counted as three unique tests for the Data element of Medical Decision Making (MDM) because they have different CPT codes, or should they be counted as two unique tests?
- Total IgA
- Tissue Transglutaminase IgA Antibody (TTG)
- Stool Pancreatic Elastase
Answer: Yes, these may be counted as three separate unique tests for MDM data review purposes. Credit is assigned when the tests are ordered. They generally should not be counted again when reviewing the results, unless the tests were ordered by a provider outside of your group and the results are subsequently reviewed by a provider within your group.
Please note that if any of these tests are billed internally by your practice, they cannot be counted toward the MDM data component for that encounter.
