GIQuIC Recognizes the Contributions of Outgoing President, Dr. Glenn Eisen, and Welcomes Incoming President, Dr. Costas Kefalas
After 11 years of service, Glenn M. Eisen, MD, MPH, FASGE will step down from his leadership role for the GI Quality Improvement Consortium (GIQuIC) Board of Directors, where he has served as President and Chair for the past four years. During this time,
Dr. Eisen has made countless contributions to the GIQuIC registry, spanning from his integral role in the initial development of the registry concept and design to his part in developing a research arm of the registry, resulting in multiple gastrointestinal
endoscopy publications featuring GIQuIC research.
Dr. Eisen’s passion for quality improvement translated into a commitment and dedication to carrying out and overseeing GIQuIC’s vision to set the standard for measuring and improving the quality of digestive health care.
“Serving on the GIQuIC Board has been a privilege and a rewarding way to spend my time,” said Dr. Eisen. “The registry has experienced much success and growth over the past 10 plus years, and is positioned to not only continue that growth
but also to serve as a powerful tool for quality improvement in endoscopy and in cognitive disease state management.”
Over one-third of U.S. gastroenterologists participate in the GIQuIC registry, representing over 700 endoscopy units,
with an impressive 12 million colonoscopies captured and nearly 2.5 million EGDs.

Costas Kefalas Assumes Role of GIQuIC President
GIQuIC, ACG and ASGE welcome Costas H. Kefalas, MD, MMM, FACG, FASGE as the next President and Chair of the Board of Directors. Dr. Kefalas most recently served as Vice-President of the GIQuIC Board.
“I want to thank Dr. Eisen for his many years of exemplary service to and leadership of GIQuIC; not only did he significantly elevate the cause of GI quality, but also he ultimately improved patient care and outcomes through his efforts,”
said Dr. Kefalas. He added, “I look forward to working with the esteemed GIQuIC Directors, as well as with the dedicated GIQuIC staff, as we together advance the GIQuIC mission.”
Dr. Kefalas has been in practice at Akron Digestive Disease Consultants, in Akron, Ohio, since 2003. He is Professor of Internal Medicine at the Northeast Ohio Medical University and is on the medical staff at Summa Health in Akron, where he serves as
a Physician Director on the Board of Directors and as the Chair of the Committee on Governance.
Dr. Kefalas has served on numerous national and state professional society boards and committees. He is currently a Trustee on the ACG Board of Trustees. He served as Chair of the ACG Board of Governors from 2016-2018, and from 2008-2014, he was the ACG
Governor for Northern Ohio. From 2011-2020, he served as an ACG Representative to the Digestive Disease National Coalition (DDNC), and from 2014-2016, Dr. Kefalas was the DDNC President. Dr. Kefalas is a member of the ASGE Reimbursement Committee
and MACRA Work Group. He co-founded the Ohio Gastroenterology Society in 2009, and served as its Founding President from 2011-2013.
Dr. Kefalas earned a combined BS/MD at the University of Akron and at the Northeast Ohio Medical University. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Summa Health and a Gastroenterology Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. Kefalas also earned a Master of Medical Management (MMM) from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Jay Yepuri Joins GIQuIC Board
GIQuIC also welcomes Jay Yepuri, MD, MS, FACG as the newest member of the GIQuIC Board of Directors.
Dr. Yepuri is a partner with Digestive Health Associates of Texas (DHAT), one of the largest gastroenterology group practices in the United States. He practices general gastroenterology and Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy in Dallas, Texas.
