ASGE supports the American Medical Association’s Physician Practice Information survey, along with 172 other health care organizations. This survey will collect data on physician practice expenses to better understand the costs providers currently face.
The Medicare physician payment schedule, maintained by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and used by many other payers, relies on 2006 cost information to develop price-earnings (PE) relative values and physician reimbursement rates. As the U.S. economy and health care system have undergone substantial changes since that time, including inflation and the widespread adoption of electronic health records and other information technology systems, PE payments no longer accurately reflect the relative resources typically required to provide physician services.
Practices and individual physicians are randomly selected to participate in this study. Selected participants will receive a short patient care survey from their practices or Mathematica. Be sure to complete the survey if selected—this is critical for its success and to ensure that practice expenses and patient care hours are accurately reflected.
