ASGE and Medtronic work together to advance AI in GI education

The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and Medtronic plc are pleased to announce a new partnership to advance the use artificial intelligence (AI) in GI clinical practices and operations.

AI is a disruptive technology that has revolutionized the practice of medicine. It has the potential to individualize patient care with speed, accuracy and quality of diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making. ASGE and Medtronic share the collective goal of harnessing AI advancements to keep the patient at the forefront in efforts to elevate standards and quality of care in GI endoscopy.

Medtronic plc, as a global leader in healthcare technology and ASGE, as the professional society advancing GI endoscopy, are committed to working together and sharing expertise and resources across organizations to improve polyp detection to prevent colon cancer across the globe.

This partnership encompasses developing an AI educational roadmap for GI. Joint efforts will include the launch of new hands-on and live training, didactic courses, on-demand resources and awards to bolster knowledge and expertise in the use of AI in GI endoscopy.

"ASGE is excited to partner with Medtronic as we are continuously scanning the horizon for advancements to support our members’ ability to improve their clinical skills with the latest in knowledge, technology and equipment, said Douglas Rex, MD, MASGE, ASGE’s President. “With this collaboration, we will be able to leverage on Medtronic’s innovations in AI to support our members in bringing their clinical practices to the next level."

“As industry leaders, we have a responsibility to keep the patient at the center of what we do; engaging in active physician partnerships and staying at the forefront of technology advancements is how we accomplish that goal”, said Giovanni Di napoli, President of Medtronic Gastrointestinal. “We are excited about the future of AI in GI – and we are committed to the ongoing collaboration with clinicians and AI experts, to design innovative solutions that meet the needs of the physicians and patients, collectively.”

Medtronic and ASGE are dedicated to enduring innovation and applications that AI brings to the field of gastroenterology and this partnership will accelerate education and developments in this area. More details of this AI roadmap for GI will be shared soon.

About Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures allow the gastroenterologist to visually inspect the upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach and duodenum) and the lower bowel (colon and rectum) through an endoscope, a thin, flexible device with a lighted end and a powerful lens system. Endoscopy has been a major advance in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. For example, the use of endoscopes allows the detection of ulcers, cancers, polyps and sites of internal bleeding. Through endoscopy, tissue samples (biopsies) may be obtained, areas of blockage can be opened and active bleeding can be stopped. Polyps in the colon can be removed, which has been shown to prevent colon cancer.

About the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Since its founding in 1941, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has been dedicated to advancing patient care and digestive health by promoting excellence and innovation in gastrointestinal endoscopy. ASGE, with almost 16,000 members worldwide, promotes the highest standards for endoscopic training and practice, fosters endoscopic research, recognizes distinguished contributions to endoscopy, and is the foremost resource for endoscopic education.
