Biography

Dr. Al-Haddad completed his medical school followed by one year of internship in Jordan, before he moved to the U.S. to pursue his medical residency at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Following his gastroenterology fellowship that included advanced endoscopy training at Mayo Clinic in Florida, Dr. Al-Haddad joined Indiana University School of Medicine in 2007 where he also pursued a master’s degree in clinical research from Indiana University/Regenstrief Health Science Institute and is currently a Professor of Medicine. During his tenure at IU, Dr. Al-Haddad served in several roles including the director of advanced endoscopy/EUS fellowship program (2007-2014), and medical director of the IU Pancreas Cyst and Pancreas Cancer Prevention Program (2007-2014). Dr. Al-Haddad served as Associate Clinical Director in the division (2016-2019), Clinical Director (2019-2022), interim Division Director (2020-2022) before being confirmed as the Division Director in January 2023 and being named the Naga P. Chalasani Chair of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Al-Haddad also serves as the Chief of Destination (International) services, and has helped grow several new clinical programs (2016-2020) including the Medical and Endoscopic Weight Loss Program, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) program, and the Innovative and Third Space Endoscopy programs. Dr. Al-Haddad’s clinical and research interests include pancreas disease, GI cancers and is a world-renowned expert in endosonography and in third space endoscopy who is regularly invited to present at national and international meetings. Dr. Al-Haddad mentored dozens of fellows and residents, is well published with over 282 manuscripts (as of January 2024), including authoring and co-authoring 18 Practice Guidelines, and is the lead author on the first North American Guideline on endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for the treatment of early-stage GI cancers published in 2023. He is also the recipient of several research and career development grants. Dr. Al-Haddad is the current Governor of the American College of Gastroenterology for the State of Indiana and serves as the Associate Editor for Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) leading clinical journal.
