Distinguished Endoscopic Research
Mentoring Award

Prasad G. Iyer, MD, MS, FASGE

"It is a great honor to receive the ASGE Endoscopic Research Mentoring Award. Mentoring is a passion of mine and provides tremendous meaning to my career. Throughout my career as an academic gastroenterologist with a focus on Barrett's esophagus endoscopic therapy and early detection, I have had the tremendous fortune to mentor numerous trainees and colleagues. It is indeed gratifying to see many of them succeed in advancing the academic and research mission of gastroenterology. I am grateful for this opportunity to contribute to and positively influence their careers."

Dr. Iyer is a professor of medicine and the director of the Esophageal Section in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Having received his medical degree from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, Dr. Iyer completed his residence in internal medicine at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Campus and his fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology and a master's degree in clinical and translational science from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He also serves as the director of the Mayo Clinic Hub for the Trial Innovation Network and the Clinical Trialist Training Program in the Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences.

Dr. Iyer’s clinical and research interests are in the early detection and endoscopic therapy of Barrett's esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma using novel biomarkers, clinical trials and artificial intelligence assisted tools. His research program is funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Department of Defense. As director of the Advanced Esophageal Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Iyer has trained and mentored numerous fellows and junior faculty who are in academic practice in the US, Canada, UK and Asia.

Dr. Iyer has been a member of the ASGE since 2003, and he was elected to Fellowship in 2013. He served as the chair of ASGE’s International Committee for two terms from 2013 to 2019. He currently chairs the DDW Hands on Training Committee, and he has served as the associate editor for GI Endoscopy (2013-2021) and as a member of the ASGE Research Committee. Dr. Iyer currently serves as an associate editor for Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

In the next several months, Dr. Iyer will be moving to Mayo Clinic Arizona to become the chair of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Along with his wife and two children, he enjoys biking, reading and traveling.
