Improving Survival of Colorectal Cancer in Their Community

December 6, 2023

ASGE Quality Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program

Pictured is the team at CHRISTUS® Good Shepherd Marshall Endoscopy Center, a longstanding honoree in the ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program (EURP). Nurse Lead Amanda Cunningham, BSN, RN, shares why honoree status is important to her team and community.

"The Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program ensures the highest quality of care is provided for our community. The city of Marshall is located in the East Texas rural area of Harrison County. Over the last 10 years, we have seen a decrease in medical services provided to our community. According to the 2022 U.S. Census survey, Marshall's population of 23,641 has a poverty rate of 25 percent. In addition, 37.8 percent of our population is African American, who are 20 percent more likely than other groups to get colorectal cancer and 40 percent more likely to die from it. With these statistics, it is important to offer the highest quality of care possible to our community. Achieving and sustaining honoree status helps our staff improve the chances of recognition, treatment and survival of colorectal cancer in our community."

Learn more about gaining honoree status in the ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program. EURP honoree units may use the ASGE Quality Star logo in promotion of their units, receive premium educational content bimonthly via an exclusive e-newsletter The Huddle and enjoy a range of additional benefits. Questions should be directed to eurp@asge.org.
