Biography

Monika Fischer, MD, received her medical degree from Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary, in 1992. After completing her training in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Fischer moved to the United States and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Indiana University. In 2011, she completed fellowships in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel diseases at Indiana University, earned a Master of Science in Clinical Science degree, and joined the Indiana University Health faculty. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the IBD Program. As a health care provider to many IBD patients, Dr. Fischer recognized the magnitude of Clostridium difficile-related harm early in her career. She has built and currently directs the Fecal Microbiota Transplant Program through which over 700 patients have been successfully treated. Dr. Fischer’s research focuses on outcomes of fecal microbiota transplantation in C difficile infection, with emphasis on therapy for severe, refractory cases.
