Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) plays a vital role in the staging and treatment of superficial gastrointestinal neoplasms. Originally developed in Japan for early gastric cancer (EGC), EMR is now widely used worldwide for conditions such as dysplastic Barrett mucosa and sessile colonic neoplasms. Today’s EMR techniques, including injection-assisted, cap-assisted and ligation-assisted approaches, share core principles of precise lesion identification, effective submucosal lift and controlled snare resection. With its proven safety and effectiveness in appropriately selected patients, EMR has become an essential option within the diagnosis and treatment of superficial GI malignancies. Get ready to practice and perfect your technique to perform EMR independently while receiving guidance from expert faculty.

This course is tailored for gastroenterologists with a minimum of two years in practice post-fellowship, who have performed at least 500 colonoscopies independently, are currently performing colonoscopy as part of daily practice, and are proficient in basic polypectomy, hemostasis, and injection techniques.

An ASGE STAR certification in lower GI EMR will be granted to those who successfully complete the knowledge and skills-based assessment requirements of the program.

Space is limited, so sign up now and secure your spot to advance your expertise!

Participants will be able to:

  • Assess one’s baseline knowledge pre-test questions, completing self-directed modules and assigned article reading in ASGE’s GI Leap prior to attending the in-person course
  • Demonstrate the use of appropriate accessories for both polyp retrieval and management of complications with specific focus on the following (application):  Lesion Recognition; Submucosal Injection Techniques; Piecemeal and Snare Resection; Polyp Retrieval; Polypectomy Site Treatment; Tattooing; Perforation and Adverse Event Management; Team Communication Skills
  • Select appropriate surveillance intervals based on current guideline
  • Appropriately select and demonstrate the use of various snares, cautery and injection/lifting technique in the endoscopic mucosal resection of “large, complex or high-risk” colonic polyps ( e.g., > 20 mm, difficult location, with depression or significant nodularity)

Course Requirements

Prior to the skills-training component, enrollees will be required to complete several online components in sequence:

  • Baseline Assessment: This test will provide you with an initial assessment of your knowledge
  • Literature: Read and review guidelines, technology reviews and key articles
  • Instructional Videos: View instructional videos from the ASGE Endoscopic Learning Library (ELL)
  • Interval Assessment: Following the online instructional components, you will retake the baseline assessment. After completing the assessment, you will receive automatic feedback and references

Participants will earn CME credit at the completion of the online curriculum.

The baseline assessment is used to measure your baseline knowledge in this topic area. The assessment should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete. After completing the baseline assessment, you’ll have access to many pre-course materials including guidelines, articles and videos. Please watch all videos and complete the interval assessment prior to your arrival. You’ll earn CME & MOC credits for reviewing all this online material and completing all assessments.

Cognitive Post-Assessment

Your course participation is not complete until you have taken the online cognitive assessment with a score of 80% or better. You will have 30 days after the course to complete the cognitive assessment, if not taken within this time frame you may not receive the Certificate of Completion for the STAR Suturing program. You will gain access to the cognitive assessment after completing all pre-requisite online course components.
