This series aims to equip advanced practice providers with practical, guideline-aligned approaches to the diagnosis and management of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). It is designed to build confidence in the use of both first-line and step-up therapies—including proton pump inhibitors, topical steroids, dietary therapy, dilation, and biologics—while emphasizing patient safety and shared decision-making. The program also focuses on standardizing longitudinal disease monitoring through symptoms, endoscopic findings (EREFS), and histology, with an emphasis on relapse prevention. Finally, it seeks to improve care coordination across gastroenterology, allergy, and nutrition services, including best practices for transitioning pediatric patients into adult care.

Part 1 addresses:

  • EoE epidemiology and natural history for APPs
  • When to suspect EoE: dysphagia, food impaction, chest pain, refractory heartburn
  • Endoscopy essentials for APPs: EREFS scoring, biopsy protocol (number/site), documentation pearls
  • Pathology: eosinophil counts, distribution, and pitfalls
  • Distinguish EoE from GERD, EGIDs, celiac, infection, pill esophagitis
  • Mini-quiz: Interpreting sample endoscopy photos and pathology reports
  • Take-home: Diagnosis checklist, biopsy order set

Ready to move from diagnosis to treatment? Continue the series with Part 2 to explore practical management strategies for eosinophilic esophagitis, including PPIs, topical steroids, biologics, dietary therapy and long-term monitoring.

View Part 2: Therapy Fundamentals

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize clinical features that should prompt evaluation for EoE in both pediatric and adult patients
  • Describe endoscopic findings and biopsy strategies that improve diagnostic yield, including appropriate use of EREFS and multi-site biopsy protocols
  • Interpret key histologic features of EoE and differentiate them from other causes of esophageal eosinophilia such as reflux esophagitis
