Question:
We are reviewing the new 2025 telehealth codes (CPT 98000-98016). Will Medicare cover these codes?
Answer:
Medicare will only recognize one of these codes, CPT 98016, which is a brief communication (virtual check-in) service. They feel the other codes are redundant and mimic the in-person evaluation and management services (99202-99215). For now, and until we get further information from Medicare, we recommend you report any audio/video visits using the in-person E&M codes with the appropriate place of service codes (either 02 or 10) with modifier 95, and any audio-only visit codes using the in-person E&M codes with modifier 93.
