The ASGE Endoscopy Quality Improvement Project – EQuIP – Prizes Program promotes quality improvement projects that have the potential to transform quality care in endoscopy.
For 2025, the program allowed DDW abstract submitters to ask for consideration of an EQuIP Prize upon submission. A financial award of $1,000 is given to the first author, who must be a trainee.
Over 250 abstract submitters requesting consideration for an EQuIP Prize were selected for presentation. Our congratulations to the first authors of the following two studies who received an ASGE EQuIP Prize!

Title: Missed opportunities account for 70% of post-endoscopy gastric cancer: A root cause analysis using the national Veterans Affairs database
Authors: Jenson Phung [pictured], Erica Loon, Jesse Fletcher, Peter Kim, Natalie J. Wilson, Anders Westanmo, Amy Gravely, Rahul Karna, Sachin B. Wani, Mohammad Bilal
Conclusions: Our analysis shows that missed opportunities account for 70% of post-endoscopy gastric cancer. This RCA can standardize future investigations of PEGC and guide implementation and adoption of quality indicators for EGD.

Title: EGD quality metrics are associated with increased detection of significant upper gastrointestinal tract pathology
Authors: Nimrod Deiss-Yehiely [pictured], Bikrum Chahal, Anneleise Frie, Patrick Pfau, Deepak V. Gopal, Mark Benson
Conclusion: EGDs completed in ≥ 7 minutes are associated with a significantly higher pathology detection rate as well as higher detection esophageal and gastric cancer. There is a significant variation in mean EGD procedure times and poor compliance with recommended quality procedure metrics. This implementation of strict multi-society US EGD quality standards is of paramount importance to ensure comprehensive high quality patient care. Future studies on educational interventions to improve EGD quality are needed.
