Adenoma Detection Rate and Artificial Intelligence

ASGE Quality Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program

Successful applicants to the ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program (EURP) submit a summary of a recently conducted quality improvement (QI) project as part of the application process. The QI project in the spotlight this month looks at adenoma detection rate (ADR) and artificial intelligence (AI).

PURPOSE/SUSPECTED PROBLEM

To increase ADR while integrating AI-assisted colonoscopy into patient care.

PERFORMANCE GOAL

To increase the facility's ADR by 10 to 15 percent.

DATA COLLECTION

Data will be collected from a control group (without AI) and experimental group (with AI). The time frame will be approximately one month. The number of patients will also be approximately the same.

EVIDENCE OF DATA COLLECTION

Data were collected from the control group (without AI) from November 1, 2021, to December 1, 2021. Data from the experimental group (using AI) was collected January 21, 2022, to February 22, 2022.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data was reviewed, and it was determined that the use of AI did increase the facility's ADR by 38.46 percent.

COMPARISON

The goal was met. The data indicated a 38.46 percent increase in ADR. The goal was to increase the facility's ADR 10 to 15 percent.

CORRECTION

No corrective action plan is needed.

REMEASUREMENT

We will plan to remeasure later in the year after all providers have used AI-assisted colonoscopy for several months.

NEW CORRECTIVE ACTION

Not applicable.

COMMUNICATION

The results of the study will be presented at the next Board Meeting on May 16, 2022. The results will also be reviewed at the next staff meeting.

We hope sharing this project summary will be useful to you and your practice. Learn more about gaining honoree status in the ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program. EURP honoree units may use the ASGE Quality Star logo in promotion of their units, receive premium educational content bimonthly via an exclusive e-newsletter The Huddle, and enjoy a range of additional benefits.
